2018 Students of the Year:
Clara & Hasie Sherman
Clara and Hasie ran their campaign in honor of some of the most courageous people they know that have fought the good fight against cancer. Those people include their mom, Molly Sherman, cousin, Lauren Tournier-Billon, one of their good family friend’s Jan Hughes, who unfortunately lost her battle to Multiple Myeloma in 2011, and their former volleyball team mate, Kennedy McCormack who beat Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
This year the Austin Chapter's Student of the Year campaign was a major success. Twelve candidate teams raised a total of $615,000 in just seven weeks! Juniors from St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, Clara and Hasie Sherman, raised an INCREDIBLE $255,000 and received the title "Students of the Year"! They were also awarded a $2,500 scholarship to the college of their choice. Kennedy McCormack, a Lymphoma survivor, and good friend of the Sherman’s came to St. Andrews to present them with their scholarship, which they chose to donate to a 17-year-old blood cancer survivor, Enrique Avila.
Sometimes cancer strikes the most unsuspecting of people.
People like Enrique.
But programs like Students of the Year help make the promise of a cure come to fruition.
Because of LLS's continued advancements and fundraising initiatives, the blood cancer survival rate is doubling, tripling, and in some cases quadrupling for patients. And many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers. They're even being tested in clinical trials for patients with a range of cancers including lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers. LLS funded drugs are also being tested for patients with other non-cancerous diseases like Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Multiple Sclerosis.
Plenty of people have stories to tell and a fight to take with cancer. If you're interested in running in the campaign and helping to save lives, or know someone who is, contact Molly.Sublett@lls.org.
