2017 Austin Student of the Year, Chase Bradely
"I'm fighting for my sister and for everyone whose life has been touched by cancer."
Chase was 12 years old when his older sister was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. After watching and supporting his sister's tough battles with blood cancer, he saw an opportunity to fight the disease with the Students of the Year campaign. He ran his campaign in honor of his sister Hunter Bradely, who is now thankfully five years in remission.
The debut year for the Austin chapter's Student of the Year campaign was a major success. Twelve student candidate teams raised a total of $144,544 in seven weeks. Chase raised the highest individual amount of $56,065 and received the title "Student of the Year" for the Austin LLS chapter. Chase was also awarded a $2500 scholarship to the college of his choice, which he chose to donate to a kid he had never met before--Sergio Garcia, a blood cancer survivor.
"It was just all part of a greater plan, for me to do this challenge..."
Sometimes cancer strikes the most unsuspecting of people. People like Sergio and Hunter.
But programs like Students of the Year help make the promise of a cure come to fruition.
Because of LLS's continued advancements and fundraising initiatives, the blood cancer survival rate is doubling, tripling, and in some cases quadrupling for patients. And many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers. They're even being tested in clinical trials for patients with a range of cancers including lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers. LLS funded drugs are also being tested for patients with other non-cancerous diseases like Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Multiple Sclerosis.
Plenty of people have stories to tell and a fight to take with cancer. If you're interested in running in the campaign and helping to save lives, or know someone who is, contact Molly.Sublett@lls.org.
